Football (Soccer) is without a doubt the most popular sport in Colombia and South America, and, in these past few days, the colombian government has announced the possibilty of making Colombia a candidate for the soccer world cup in 2026. (Brazil is hosting the 2014 world cup, therefore South America can't have the world cup again until 2026). At first, the proposition started with a Peruvian official proposing a world cup organized by three countries (Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia). This idea was well received by the president of Colombia. However, the vicepresident later said Colombia was ready for its own world cup, without Peru and Ecuador's help: "I want Colombia to host the 2026 world cup by ourselves. I think we can do it"-Mr. Francisco Santos (vicepresident of Colombia).
The world cup of 2026 seems remote, but there is much to do before the country can officially be a candidate for that event. The country is hosting next year's sub-20 soccer world cup, which means improvements are being made right now, however, the country's stadiums are way too small for a major-league soccer world cup. Existing stadiums will need to be fixed so they can have more people in them, and new stadiums must be built. The country's transportation network must be greatly improved, as well as its airports and hotels. However, most of these things are being improved right now anyways, and there are still 16 years to go. Threfore, Colombia should definetely work towards this goal. A soccer world cup is a perfect way to improve Colombia's reputation in the rest of the world, as well as a boost to tourism and international investment inside the country. If Colombians join and work to improve their infrastructure, the country will for sure be able to host a great world cup. In fact, during Jack Warner (FIFA vicepresident) 's visit to the country in march, he suggested Colombia to try make themselves an official candidate for the 2026 world cup. "I want to congratulate Colombia sincerely, I feel Colombian myself right now."
El fútbol es sin duda alguna el deporte más popular en Colombia y Sudamérica, y, en estos días pasados, el gobierno colombiano ha anunciado la posibilidad de hacer a Colombia un candidato para el mundial de fútbol en 2026. (Brasil va a realizar el mundial del 2014, por lo tanto Sudamérica no puede tener el mundial otra vez hasta el 2026). Al principio, la proposición comenzó con un funcionario peruano que propuso un mundial organizado por tres países (Ecuador, Perú, y Colombia). Esta idea tuvo buena acogida por el presidente de Colombia.
